Full Description

A former level crossing keepers cottage at Tattershall Road. The crossing was on part of the Great Northern Railway's, East Lincolnshire Railway line, this part of which opened in October 1848. The cottage is said to have been built after an unfortunate accident occurred on the line here, when the crossing keeper and his dog were killed. The keeper had previously taken shelter in a temporary hut on the site, that had been fashioned out of railway sleepers. This hut caught fire on January 29th 1849, killing the occupants. The cottage was built to a standardised design that appeared on all the manned crossings of the Boston to Firsby stretch of the ELR. The basic design was L-shaped, with the long arm of the L running parallel to the railway. The cottage is of two storeys, and was built of red brick with pitched tile roofs. The building is still extant, and is now in use as a private residence. {1}{2}{3}
