Full Description

62074 Blankney Hall was one of the grandest houses in Lincolnshire during the nineteenth century. It was a grand Palladian House built by the Chaplin family, and saw country house life and entertainment on a large scale in Victorian and Edwardian times. It was built in the 1790s and was added to and remodelled by Henry Chaplin. The stables were designed for Blankney by E.J.Wilson in 1831. The grounds at Blankney were of great interest, not least for the graves of numerous horses, hounds and dogs. (See also record for Blankney Park - 62133). {1}{2}{3} Blankney Hall was requisitioned in the second world war and from 1940, or perhaps earlier, functioned as the Digby Sector Operations Room until 1945. Before the end of 1945 it closed to re-open the same September and was renamed Lincolnshire Sector HQ in November. It fulfilled this purpose until March 1946, closing the next month. The house was seriously damaged by fire in 1946. It was demolished in 1960 and subsequent years; the last part of the service wing was demolished in 1995. {4} The gates to Blankney Hall are listed Grade II, and date from the mid nineteenth century (see PRN 65579). The stable block is also listed. It was built in 1825 by E.J.Wilson for Henry Chaplin (see PRN 65627). {5} Blankney Hall, Blankney. Partially extant 19th century farmstead. Regular courtyard with multiple regular yards. The farmhouse is detached from the main working complex. There has been a partial loss (less than 50%) of traditional buildings. Located within a Church and/or Manor farm group. {6}
