Full Description

Cropmarks of a probable Bronze Age round barrow, to the south-west of Tetney. Identified on aerial photographs examined as part of the National Mapping Programme. {1} The remains of a prehistoric log coffin were recovered from the barrow in August 2018, during the digging of a pond at Tetney Golf Course. The barrow had been largely buried by alluvium until its uncovering during the works. The coffin was secured by officers of Historic England and staff of the University of Sheffield, and was believed to be of late Neolithic or early Bronze Age date. The finding of the coffin was believed to be of national importance, and prompted detailed analysis of aerial photographs and Environment Agency lidar data for the barrow cemetery known to be in this area. This study allowed the location of the barrow to be mapped with much greater accuracy than that achieved by the NMP. {2} This Bronze Age round barrow to the south-west of Tetney was scheduled in August 2021. The barrow appears on aerial photography as a circular cropmark, measuring 10m in diameter. Approximately half of the barrow mound was removed during the excavations conducted in August 2018. These excavations uncovered the remains of the waterlogged late Neolithic or early Bronze Age timber coffin, with associated human remains and artefacts. The coffin had been set into the underlying clay, with the Bronze Age barrow being constructed over the site at a later date. Evidence of a second burial within the mound was also identified during the excavation. {3}
