Description

The remains of a prehistoric log coffin were discovered during the digging of a pond at Tetney Golf Course. The coffin was recovered from the site of a probable Bronze Age barrow, that had been largely buried by alluvium until its uncovering during the works. The coffin was secured by officers of Historic England and staff of the University of Sheffield, and was believed to be of late Neolithic or early Bronze Age date. The finding of the coffin was believed to be of national importance, and prompted detailed analysis of aerial photographs and Environment Agency lidar data for the barrow cemetery known to be in this area. It allowed the locations of the individual barrows to be mapped with greater accuracy, and also identified a group of four previously unrecorded barrows, to the west of the main group. {1}
