Full Description

PRN 43944 During geophysical survey, trial trenching and boreholing, two sections of ditch were recorded. The ditch sections were thought to be part of the same feature, forming a circular ditch of circa 10m diameter, which is thought to be the ditch surrounding a small round barrow. If so, the geophysical survey suggests that there are more round barrows present on the site, forming a barrow cemetery. There is cropmark evidence for other possible barrows in the vicinity, circa 350m north-east (PRN 42929) and circa 350m north-west (PRN 43215). From Spilsby Road (circa 340m south of the site), a false horizon made the spoilheap from the trial trenching appear to be on the skyline, and such false horizons were commonly used to make barrow cemeteries appear to project into the sky. The site itself is the highest land in the area and all the other barrow sites are visible from it; there is probably a high degree of inter-visiblity from and between any of these sites. A possible causewayed enclosure (PRN 43212) circa 250m north-east of the site appears to be the main focus of all this ritual activity.{1}{2}{3}
