Description

An evaluation, in the form of test pitting, was undertaken to sample the topsoil and extract any artefactual material in order to establish its nature, distribution and density. Initially, fifteen 1m squared test pits were to be excavated, placed at all the principle points of a 30m grid placed across the site as part of the geophysical survey. However, after excavation of three test pits, the soil was found to be too moist to be effectively sieved. In situ prehistoric deposits were recovered, and after consultation with the Senior Built Environment Officer, it was decided to abandon the programme of test pitting.{1}
