Full Description

PRN 13560 A geophysical survey identified a series of faint linear anomalies displaying characteristics of boundary features.{1} During trial trenching, four undated ditches were recorded. The first was curvilinear and aligned north-west-west/north; two tiny fragments of fired clay were found in the ditch fill, but were unable to assist in dating of the ditch. The second ditch was curvilinear and aligned north-east/south-west, curving south-east at the north-east end. The third was a north-east/south-west aligned ditch or gully, while the fourth was a west-north-west/east-south-east aligned ditch with a later recut, and was thought to be a drain or flood defence. These features may be of Romano-British date, but this could not be established, nor could the nature of the activities relating to the ditches, which lie on the edge of a marginal lower-lying area of mudflats, creeks and migrating streams thought to have been active in the later Iron Age or Romano-British period. The focus of the unquantified activities may be in or beyond the south-east corner of the proposed development site. The activities were thought to be seasonal, as abundant palaeochannels attest to flooding, which would have made the site uninhabitable during winter months.{2}{3}
