Description

An evaluation, in the form of trial trenching, was undertaken on circa 12ha of land north of Great Fen Road, prior to proposed development of a rugby and athletics stadium. Initially, nine trenches were investigated, with a further two added as part of a contingency allocation. Trench lengths varied from 10m to 30m. A geophysical survey had been carried out previous to the trial trenching, and so some trenches were positioned to investigate areas of seemingly random magnetic activity, while others were positioned to investigate linear anomalies believed to be of potential archaeological significance. Trenches 6 and 10, the contingency trenches, were placed to gain a better understanding of a small group of features towards the south-east corner of the site.{1}
