Full Description

PRN 43848 Fieldwalking on land at Tumby found 714 pieces of worked flint dating from the Early Neolithic to the Bronze Age. Material from all phases of the flint tool production process was recovered, including flakes, cores, waste fragments and tools. {1}{2} A second stage of evaluation in 2000 found a further 184 flints in three trial trenches. The assemblage reflected that of the earlier fieldwalking. {3}{4} The fieldwalking programme in 2002 recovered far greater quantities of worked flint on the 'north island' than on the 'south island'. This may suggest that the northern area was more intensively exploited than its southern neighbour during the Neolithic and Bronze Age periods. Alternatively it could indicate that later agricultural activity has more severely affected the northern part of the site, truncating prehistoric land surfaces and features, and thereby liberating greater quantities of artefactual material into the modern ploughsoil. It is difficult to provide evidence to support either one of these possibilities over the other. The material from both areas including a proportion of abraded flakes and others with very fresh edges. The later group suggest that there is still some in-situ material in both parts of the site. The largest proportion of the assemblage, over 5200 pieces of worked or modified flint in all, dates from the Early Neolithic activity but there is also a slight Later Mesolithic presence. The assemblage also suggests that the site was continued to be used, albeit in a reduced capacity in the Late Neolithic and/or Early Bronze Age. The evidence suggests that the Early Neolithic activity was more focused upon the 'north island', although Late Neolithic to Bronze Age material was evenly distributed across two halves of the site. {5}{6} A further 41 struck or modified flints were recovered during excavation in 2004. Most were derived from the topsoil. {7}{8}
