Full Description
PRN 61157
There are two entries for North Hykeham in the Domesday Book, and land there was held by Baldwin (for the King) and Count Alan. A mill is also recorded. {1}
The name Hykeham means 'the homestead or estate where the blue tit-mouse is found'. {2}
Medieval green glazed sherds, including base and handle fragments, and tile fragments were found in a garden of Chapel Lane (SK 9475 6573) by the owner (1977). {3}{4}{11}
Ridge and furrow has been noted adjacent to Meadow Lane (SK 9485 6560). An aerial photograph of the area does not clearly show the earthworks. {5}{6}
In 1990 a training excavation was undertaken by the community archaeologists at Heritage Trust of Lincolnshire. It was located in the garden of Arthur Higgs (at SK 9484 6579), close to the conjectured site of the medieval chapel. Medieval glass and pottery were recovered, as well as a spread of building material. This indicates that there was medieval activity near the site, which may have included the chapel. The presence of glass on the site lends support to this. {7}
See records 61167 and 61168 for records for a possible grange and priory in North Hykeham.
The Enclosure Act for North Hykeham was passed in 1769, and was completed by 1807. {8}{9}
It is suggested that 8 Chapel Lane partly dates to the sixteenth or seventeenth century. {10}
