Monument record MLI80554 - Chapel at Culverthorpe Hall
Summary
The chapel at Culverthorpe Hall was designed in the late 17th century but not built until c. 1735. It ceased to be used for worship in 1803 and was subsequently demolished. Only the façade now remains, and this may have been re-used as part of a folly in the 19th century. The building was recently reconstructed, incorporating the surviving façade.

Full Description
PRN 61116
Limestone ashlar temple, built c. 1740 as part of the landscaped park of Culverthorpe Hall. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. (Note - only the façade is listed.) {1}
The chapel to the east of Culverthorpe Hall was designed in 1691 by William Stanton, and built possibly around 1735. The chapel is first depicted on a view of Culverthorpe Hall c.1740. The chapel ceased to be used for divine worship in 1803, and with the exception of the facade (listed II*) it was demolished in the nineteenth century. Pevsner suggests that the facade had been moved, although the results of the evaluation trenches excavated in December 1998 appear to disprove this. The foundations of the north and south walls of the chapel which align with the chapel facade were identified. An earlier wall foundation was also revealed. Two insubstantial walls had also been built, perhaps in the nineteenth century to create a folly. {2}{3}{4}
During the subsequent watching brief in October 1999 the remains of floor supports running the length of the nave and demarcating the central aisle were revealed. {5}{6}
