Full Description

The name 'Bytham' comes from the Old English meaning 'the homestead in the broad valley'. {1} There are three entires for the settlement of Little Bytham in the Domesday Book. {2} a watching brief (at TF 01262 17892) was carried out on land adjacent to Storey's Lane. Medieval pottery was recovered dating from the tenth to the fourteenth century. Two gullies, a post hole and a wall were identified, although these are undated. A subsoil sealing these features contained medieval pottery, suggesting a medieval or earlier date for these features. {3}{4}
