Full Description

PRN 70176 EXCAVATIONS IN 1986, 1995 AND 1997 IN THE AREA OF ST MARK'S STATION HAVE REVEALED EVIDENCE OF LATE SAXON ACTIVITY. POTTERY EVIDENCE INDICATES REOCCUPATION OCCURRED IN THE FIRST QUARTER OF THE TENTH CENTURY. STRUCTURAL FEATURES CONSISTED OF POSTHOLES, SLOTS FOR TIMBER BEAMS AND SUCCESSIVE CLAY FLOORS IN THE AREA ADJACENT TO HIGH STREET. THIS ATTESTS TO CONTINUOUS OCCUPATION DURING THE TENTH AND ELEVENTH CENTURY. RECOVERY OF OATS AND BARLEY AND SOME OF THE POTTERY SUGGESTS BREWING MAY HAVE TAKEN PLACE AT THIS TIME. TOWARDS THE WESTERN END OF THE STUDY AREA MORE ACTIVITY WAS NOTED IN THE FORM A COMPLEX OF DITCHES, DEPOSITS AND A CLAY-LINED FEATUR, POSSIBLY A HEARTH. THIS AND THE CHARCOAL-RICH PRIMARY FILLS WITHIN THE DITCHES MAY INDICATE THAT SOME FORM OF PROCESSING WAS TAKING PLACE IN THE IMMEDIATE LOCALITY. {1}{2}
