Full Description
PRN 70175
IN A TRENCH LOCATED TOWARDS THE WESTERN END OF THE STUDY AREA AT ST MARK'S, HIGH STREET, RIVERINE SEDIMENTS DATING TO THE ROMAN PERIOD AND POSSIBLY EARLIER WERE IDENTIFIED. TWO CHANNELS CONTAINING RIVERINE SEDIMENTS WERE RECORDED, THE EASTERMOST CONTAINING FREQUENT SHERDS OF ROMAN POTTERY DATING TO THE LATE THIRD TO FOURTH CENTURY. A 2.6 M LONG POST WAS ALSO FOUND WHICH HAD BEEN DRIVEN INTO THE WEST BANK, AND WAS HELD IN PLACE BY LARGE LIMESTONE FRAGMENTS PACKED AROUND ITS BASE. THIS MAY HAVE BEEN A MOORING POST OR PART OF A JETTY, PERHAPS SUGGESTING THAT THIS CHANNEL WAS NAVIGABLE AT THIS TIME. {1}{2}
