Excavations in the 1980s and 1995-1997 have revealed much evidence for Roman suburban occupation in the area of St Mark's Station. Between the station platforms a mid to late 2nd century timber structure was recorded. This building was probably used for smithing and subsequently underwent several phases of modification. In the mid third century stone strip buildings began to be built along Ermine Street, and continue into the mid to late 4th century. At St Mark's Church site mid to late 2nd century drainage ditches were recorded, with a rough limestone surface, possibly a 'hardstanding' for roadside booths or stalls. Again, there is evidence for 2nd to 3rd century smithing. As at the station site, the ground level was subsequently raised and a sequence of timber and stone buildings were constructed, which continued into the 4th century. Further evidence was found for occupation close to the High Street in advance of the redevelopment of the St Mark's area. Two buildings were located north of the station building, one between the station platforms, and another within the south platform area. A stone floor and an oven or kiln flue were located in this structure. Again, they seem to have been abandoned by the late or very late 4th century. {1}{2}
During works for services for the University of Lincolnshire and Humberside, approximately 10m to the west of High Street a very indistinct layer of lime mortar was recorded. It may represent the remains of a floor surface belonging to a roadside structure. {3}{4}
