Full Description

PRN 70153 The north gate of the Roman Colonia of Lincoln.{1} A record of the remains was made in 1995. {2} The arch spans the line of Ermine Street, the principal Roman road from London to York, providing access to the north from the walled town. The remains include the inner arch, the eastern arch (currently used for pedestrians) and part of the springer of the western arch. The current ground level at the central and western arches is approximately two metres above the late Roman ground level. The bastion, the semicircular front of the west gate tower, lies to the north west of the arch. The remains consist of a semicircular stone structure which was later incorporated into a rectangular medieval gate structure. {2} Observations made of ground works to the immediate north of the archway revealed areas of metalling associated with the earlier use of the road and gateway. Some of those are presumed to be of Roman date. {3} During a watching brief, the northward extent of the western arch wall was located. A wall exposed during groundworks contrasted in composition with the visible remains, and may belong to the earlier Roman wall core. {7}{8} Grade I listed remains of the inner face of the Roman north gateway, and the adjoining house to east. The gate dates from the 3rd century and the house from the 17th century. The gate was restored in the 14th century. The site [gate or house or both] were altered in 18th, 19th and mid and late 20th century. The gate has coursed squared stone facing with a rubble core. The adjoining house has a plain tile roof and two brick gable stacks. The main archway has a smaller archway to the right with a pedestrian tunnel. On the north side are the remains of the inner walls of the gateway, which are approximately ten metres long. The house has a central beaded plank door with a 20th century tiled hood, flanked by single windows. Above are two 20th century windows. The Newport Arch is the remnant of the north gate to the Roman legionary fortress, and became the north gate of the late Roman and medieval city.
