Full Description

PRN 70102 DURING EXCAVATIONS IN ADVANCE OF CONSTRUCTION OF THE CENTRAL LIBRARY THERE WAS FOUND THE REMAINS OF A METALLED SURFACE RUNNING EAST-WEST AND OVER THE REMAINS OF THE ROMAN WALL. IN ADDITION THE REMAINS OF THE POSTERN GATE WAS FOUND THROUGH WHICH THIS TRACK PASSED. IT IS SUGGESTED THAT A PATH EXISTED OUT OF THE CITY UTILISING AN EARLIER BREACH IN THE CITY WALL. AT THIS EXIT A MORE FORMAL GATEWAY WAS CONSTRUCTED BEFORE THE MID TWELFTH CENTURY TO THE EARLY MID THIRTEENTH CENTURY. THIS GATEWAY WAS BLOCKED UP AND THE PATHWAY WENT OUT OF USE SOON AFTER THE FORMATION OF THE FRIARY IN ABOUT 1230. {1}{2}
