Full Description
PRN 60569
Romano-British pottery and a single piece of tegula were found during fieldwalking in 1995. {5}{2}
ROMANO-BRITISH ACTIVITY WAS IDENTIFIED DURING AN EVALUATION IN 1995 AT MOUNT LANE. FEATURES IDENTIFIED INCLUDED DITCHES, AND A GRAVEL QUARRY WHICH WAS PURPOSEFULLY BACKFILLED IN THE LATE 4TH CENTURY AD. RUBBLE AND TILE IN ITS FILL COULD IMPLY THE PROXIMITY OF STONE OR HALF-TIMBERED STRUCTURES, THOUGH IT IS UNLIKELY THAT SUCH REMAINS LIE WITHIN THE PROPOSED DEVELOPMENT AREA. A GROUP OF EARTH-CUT FEATURES IN THE SAME TRENCH HAVE ALSO BEEN DATED TO THE 3RD CENTURY AD OR LATER. IN OTHER TRENCHES, A SERIES OF INTER-CUTTING FEATURES HAVE BEEN DATED PRINCIPALLY WITHIN ROMAN AND MEDIEVAL PERIODS. {1}{2}
A WATCHING BRIEF IN 1997 REVEALED AN INDETERMINATE CUT WITH 3RD CENTURY AD POTTERY. {3}{4}
