53 MEDIEVAL POTTERY FRAGMENTS, OFTEN GREEN LEAD GLAZED, AND INCLUDING HANDLES AND BASES WERE FOUND SCATTERED ABOUT THE FIELD DURING FIELDWALKING BY THE WASHINGBOROUGH ARCHAEOLOGY GROUP ON 24/10/1993. {1}{2}
ALSO 45 MEDIEVAL COINS AND 379 OTHER MEDIEVAL METAL ARTEFACTS, AND 23 LEAD WEIGHTS AND SEALS WERE ALSO RECOVERED. {2}, HTM 8M
153 trial trenches were excavated on the proposed route of the Lincoln Eastern Bypass. The Roman walls which may have been still visible at this date were extensively robbed out in the medieval period, probably as construction material for the nearby Sheepwash Grange. In a ditch there was the charred remains of wattle and daub which is possibly a structure which stood on the site. The amount of late 14th century green glaze is possibly part of a roof, which would again imply that a structure stood here or nearby. An area of iron panning may have been the remains of a midden full of dung and straw. Large amounts of medieval pottery were recovered, including a sherd of Siegberg ware and fragments of a bearded face jug. There was also a fragment of a polished bone point which had lost both ends and so its use was unknown, but it may have been a needle, or hairpin, or clothes fastener. {4} {5}
Fieldwalking was undertaken on the proposed route of the Lincoln Eastern Bypass. An artefact scatter of medieval pottery was collected including 31 sherds of Lincoln glazed wares dating to the 13th to 15th centuries; 18 sherds of Potterhanworth ware (12th to 15th centuries) and small amounts of Toynton ware, Humberware and a single fragment of a Siegburg type drinking jug. {6}{7}
During monitoring of trial pits along the proposed route of the Lincoln Eastern Bypass in August to December 2008, Archaeological Project Services found a stone surface and seven sherds of medieval ceramic tile. {8}{9}
