Full Description
60278
Manor Farm, North Street, has an early nineteenth century farmhouse (which is listed Grade II - for the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest). Many of the buildings which appear on the 1905 Ordnance County Series second edition county series map appear to survive to the present. There is an earthwork adjacent to the farm, which has been interpreted as being a possible garden feature in the form of a moat. {1}{2}{3}{4}
A building survey was undertaken prior to conversion of the farm to residential properties. The farm buildings are built of coursed limestone rubble with brick and stone dressings and pantile roofs. They included a threshing barn of probable early nineteenth-century date, a probable cattle shelter of nineteenth-century date, later used as a cowhouse, and a mostly collapsed structure interpreted as a probable cartshed and implement store, possibly dating from around the middle of the nineteenth century. The buildings are all depicted on a series of estate maps from 1876 and 1877. The overall impression is of an evolutionary farm developed in a piecemeal fashion around the centrally positioned threshing barn. A degree of conformity with late eighteenth- to nineteenth-century design ideals may be evident although, the layout in general appears to have been determined by early elements such as the barn. The barn was altered drastically during the twentieth century to allow access by modem farm machinery, while the probable open-fronted cattle shelter was converted into a modern cowhouse. {5}{6}
Manor House (Manor Farm), Digby. Partially extant 19th century farmstead. Regular courtyard with multiple regular yards. The farmhouse is attached to a range of working buildings. There has been significant loss (greater than 50%) of traditional buildings. Located within a Church and/or Manor farm group. Large modern sheds are located on the site. {7}
