Full Description

PRN 60264 Earthworks are visible to the east and south east of the current Howell Hall. These include two parallel water-filled ditches and two filled-in circular ponds as well as further ditches, ridges and uneven areas. The ditches and ponds have previously been interpreted as a moat (e.g. on the 1905 O.S. map) but actually appear to represent the remains of a formal garden associated with an earlier hall. The hall itself is represented by an area of hollowed and uneven ground to the south of the present building. This is almost certainly the same site from which stone foundations including walls described as 'nearly 3 feet wide' were removed in the early 19th century. Some of the stonework from the earlier hall was said to have been re-used in the present Hall (PRN 64452) and in village houses. {1}{2}{3} In 1965, the site was visited by an O.S. field inspector who confirmed that the remains represent garden features rather than a moat although many of the earthworks had been destroyed. {1} A scatter of medieval and post medieval pottery was seen at TF 139 463, at the south east corner of the earthworks area. This material is probably related to the hall and gardens. {2}
