Full Description

The settlement of Lea, documented in Domesday Book, has suffered no marked or long-term diminution of population and it has expanded rapidly as a suburb of Gainsborough during the 20th century. Its core is organised principally along the north to south main through road, with minor realignments of that road that can be documented in the 19th and 20th century. This probably represents a reorientation through 90 degrees from an east-west axis, with the Church of St Helen at the east end of the Main Street that formerly continued west of the Main Road line and is marked by a footpath. The creation of the Andersons' mansion taking over the south-east part of the village in the 17th century and the growing importance of the Gainsborough Road are the likely moving factors. {1}{2}{3} A watching brief at SK8268 8692 recovered three sherds of 12th-16th century pottery. {4}{5}
