Full Description

A small late 18th century house which was enlarged in 1840 to 1845 by William Railton for the Ecclesiastical Commissioners who bought the estate as a palace for the Bishops of Lincoln which it remained until 1888. The stables are late eighteenth century and altered by Railton. The hall is now a college. {1} Riseholme Hall (Lindsey College of Agriculture ) is a Grade II listed former country house which is now the College of Agriculture. It was built in the early 18th century and then refaced and extended in 1840 by William Railton in Italianate style. The Hall was constructed of ashlar and render and has hipped slate roofs, five tall ashlar stacks. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {2} A historic building survey was undertaken in 2020, focusing on three rooms on the first floor of the 1840 extension, which were subjected to the greatest degree of alteration during renovation works to the hall's interior. The plaster ceilings of all three rooms were damaged and had been removed, exposing the historic hand-riven timber laths. These were the primary focus of the survey. They were nailed to the roof timbers with iron lath nails, which in places had caused them to split almost halfway along their length. The laths also showed significant damage from both water and age. All appeared original, though there were differences in styles between the rooms. {3}{4}
