Full Description

[This record includes information from PRN 53423 which has been deleted.] The settlement remains of Newton lay south of St Michael's church in fields named House Close and Homestead in 1813. The earthworks were reportedly destroyed in 1964 when the site produced Romano-British, pre-Conquest and later medieval pottery. Some earthworks appear to be recorded on later aerial photographs but were unchecked by RCHM fieldwork. The documentary evidence for Toft and Newton is so intertwined through the Middle Ages that is difficult to distinguish between them. In the sixteenth century Newton was a small but viable settlement. Some decline in the later seventeenth century may be associated with enclosure. {1}{2} Plots of the earthworks taken from aerial photographs and recorded as part of the National Mapping Programme show extensive areas of crofts, tofts, holloways and ridge and furrow to the south of the village. {3}{5}
