Full Description

THE SETTLEMENT REMAINS OF THE VILLAGE OF TOFT FALLS INTO AT LEAST THREE DISCRETE BLOCKS, THOUGH THE EXACT INTERPRETATION OF THEM IS UNCERTAIN. TOFT WAS RECORDED AS A SINGLE MANORIAL HOLDING IN 1086 WHICH IN 1279 WAS GRANTED TO THE GILBERTINE PRIORY OF SIXHILLS. THE ESTATE REMAINED A VALUABLE POSESSION OF THE PRIORY, PERHAPS RUN FROM A GRANGE FARM UNTIL THE DISSOLUTION. THIS POSSIBLY CAUSED MODIFICATIONS TO THE ORIGINAL SETTLEMENT. THE REMAINS THERE WERE PARTLY DESTROYED IN THE MID 1980'S. BOTH NEWTON AND TOFT HAD THEIR OWN CHURCHES AND FIELD SYSTEMS BY THE TWELFTH CENTURY, ALTHOUGH THEY HAD A VERY CLOSE RELATIONSHIP, AND THEY WERE RETURNED TOGETHER IN TAXATION RETURNS. THERE WAS POSSIBLY A EDWARD III (1327 - 1377) SILVER PENNY FROM THE ARCHBISHOP OF YORK MINT, AND IS THOUGHT TO BE ABOUT 1350. {1}{2}{3} DURING WORK ON A PIPELINE THROUGH THE VILLAGE, REMAINS OF WHAT MAY HAVE BEEN A MEDIEVAL TRACK WERE IDENTIFIED AT TF04288814. THE TRACK COMPRISED FREQUENT COBBLES IN DARK GREY CLAY AND MAY HAVE BEEN A PRE-CURSOR TO THE MODERN MAIN STREET OR RELATED TO CHURCH LANE WHICH APPEARS TO RESPECT ITS MEDIEVAL ALIGNMENT. {4}{5}, HTM 12M
