Full Description
PRN 53280
THE DOCUMENTATION OF THE TWO ADJACENT SETTLEMENTS NAMED TORRINGTON, ALTERNATIVELY DISTINGUISHED AS EAST AND WEST (OR LESS COMMONLY AS LITTLE AND GREAT) IS CHARACTERISTICALLY DIFFICULT TO DISENTANGLE. SURVIVNG EARTHWORKS INDICATE THAT THE SETTLEMENT ONCE HAD A REGULAR PLAN BUT IT IS UNCLEAR WHEN IT WAS DESERTED. IT HAD 18 HOUSEHOLDS IN 1563 AND 70 COMMUNICANTS IN 1603. THE SURVEY OF DEPOPULATIONS IN 1607 RECORDED ONLY ENGROSSING BY THE RECTOR, TO THE EXTENT OF OCCUPYING THE LAND OF A FARM AND LETTING THE HOUSE STAND EMPTY. IN 1662 14 PERSONS PAID THE HEARTH TAX AND 1676 ONLY 41 COMMUNICANTS WERE RETURNED; THIS TOGETHER WITH THE FIGURES OF 11 AND 13 FAMILIES IN THE PERIOD 1705-23 PERHAPS SHOWS SOME DROP IN THE SEVENTEENTH CENTURY POPULATION AND THAT MAY HAVE BEEN ASSOCIATED WITH THE ENCLOSURE OF THE PARISH IN ABOUT 1670. THE NINETEENTH CENTURY FIGURES FLUTUATING BETWEEN 15 AND 21 HOUSES, INCLUDED AT LEAST 2 FARMS AWAY FROM THE VILLAGE NUCLEUS. ITS LATER HISTORY INDICATES IN PART A RADICAL NINETEENTH CENTURY CHANGE IN LAYOUT ASSOCIATED AS AT BLEASBY WITH MID CENTURY PROSPERITY AND CONFIDENCE IN TENANT FARMING AND INNOVATION IN FARM BUILDINGS AND PRACTICES. {1}{2}{3}, HTM 43M
Ivy house farm falls either within or on the very edge of the scheduled area. It dates from the mid nineteenth century when the land was part of the Turnor estates. Turnor who had a passion for building is said to have built all the buildings in this rare planned Victorian farm. {8}
