Full Description

THE SETTLEMENT OF HOLTON SHOWS LITTLE SIGN OF DECLINE THAT CAN BE DISENTANGLED FROM THAT OF BECKERING. THE SETTLEMENT'S LAYOUT CONSISTS OF AN E-W STREET WITH PROPERTIES TO THE NORTH AND SOUTH INCLUDING THE CHURCH AND RECTORY, BLOCKED AT ITS EAST END BY A LARGE SQUARISH BLOCK NOW OCCUPIED BY HOLTON HALL, THAT CAUSES THE ROAD TO DIVERT NORTH AND SOUTH. THIS MAY HAVE ITS ORIGIN IN THE GRANGE OF SIXHILLS PRIORY. THE ROAD ALONG ITS NORTH SIDE ALSO FORMERLY CONTINUED WEST WITH PROPERTIES ALL ALONG ITS NORTH SIDE PERHAPS OVERLYING RIDGE AND FURROW, INTO AN AREA OF SOILMARKS RECORDED ON APs EVIDENTLY MARKING FURTHER PROPERTIES. {1}{2}
