5 MESSUAGES WERE RECORDED IN 1582. LATER SETTLEMENT WAS DISPERSED TO FARMS AROUND THE PARISH WITH NINETEENTH CENTURY SQUATTERS' ENCLOSURES ON THE MAIN ROAD SIDE. GOOD EARTHWORKS SURVIVED UNTIL BULLDOZED IN 1954 AND 1956. TRIAL TRENCHES FAILED TO LOCATE VILLAGE STRUCTURES.{1}
In 1957 trial excavation of two weeks duration was undertaken to ascertain the extent of damage caused by the levelling of the site and to assess the possible value of further excavation. A document dated to 1601 describes the benefice as having a mansion home and garth adjoining, containing half an acre. This house had apparently disappeared by the early eigtheenth century, when a description of the site would seem to place it to the north of the church (although nothing was found to substantiate this). A tablet in the church commemorating Sit George St Paul records that "Hee builded and furnished this faire house of Snarford". Sir George died in 1613, so that the house referred to must have been a rebuilding of an earlier St Paul house. It may well be that both sites in Hall Close may belong to the St Paul era. The names of the fields concerned, the Hall Close, the Hall Yards and the Bottom Hall Yards refer to the time when the old settlement area had been deserted and had been incorporated into the Manor House estate.{2}
The Manor House seems to have been demolished by the early 19th century.{3}
An archaeological watching brief recorded a number of features dating to the post-medieval period. These included a large ditch which measured 2.6m across, which contained tile and pottery dating to the 17th to 20th century. A large pit was also recorded which contained pottery dating to te Victorian period.{11}{12}
