Full Description

Roman pottery reported from gardens. {1} Local reports of a 'Roman pavement' found in a garden at approximately TF 027793. {2} Geophysical surveys and trial trenching were undertaken in 1998 and 1999, centred on TF0245 7925. Several features were recorded in Trenches 4, 5 and 6 which were thought to date to the Roman period. Dating evidence was extremely sparse, however, with Roman and 5th-7th century Saxon pottery being found across this part of the site, but in quantities too small for certain dating of features, so any interpretation is tentative at best. Probable boundary ditches were thought to represent part of an extensive field system, with evidence for a beam slot suggesting the presence of structures. A ditch recorded in Trench 5 may join up with a further ditch recorded in Trench 6 to form an enclosure. The possible linking ditch in Trench 6 was recut at least four times, migrating eastwards over time. Early Saxon pottery was found in the final recut. A double-ditch feature was found directly on top of this boundary, with one sherd of early Saxon pottery in the upcast. See also PRN 54604. {3}{4}{5} Trial trenching in 2000, centred on TF0245 7925, recovered nine sherds of Roman pottery. {6}{7} An archaeological watching brief centred on 02697923 identified a rubbish pit containing occasional charcoal flecks and a single sherd of late Roman pottery. {8}{9} An archaeological watching brief and subsequent archaeological excavation conducted in 2001, retrieved a number of Romano-British pottery sherds, most of which were from the later Roman period (mid 3rd century onwards), but with a scatter of earlier material. {10}{11}
