Full Description

Sudbrooke was held from at least 1086 by Peterborough Abbey. It was populous before the Black Death, but decline followed. The settlement appears to have been made up of two distinct elements, of which only the north one survives as a focus for dwellings. These are arranged on both sides of an east to west aligned street, which bends at the west end to skirt the churchyard. The tithe award map of 1838 (relating only to the old enclosures) shows a regular pattern of properties on the north side of the street and running east from the church and now obscured by modern development, still visible on aerial photographs of 1947. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}{6} The majority of Sudbrooke was monastic land, which was acquired by the Grantham family after the Dissolution. {7}
