Full Description

Cropmarks of a possible medieval field system, identified on aerial photographs by the National Mapping Programme. {1}{2}{3} Traces of possible medieval ridge and furrow were identified in this area in December 2015, during magnetometry survey of land off Barlings Lane. The survey recorded a large number of linear magnetic anomalies running across much of the site. Most of these anomalies likely relate to modern cultivation disturbance or drainage, although it was thought possible that some may represent areas of earlier agricultural activity. {4}{5} Subsequent trial trenching, conducted on the Barlings Lane site in March 2016, confirmed the presence of a number of former plough furrows in this area. No finds were recovered from these furrows, however, and their exact origin remains unclear. {6}{7}
