Full Description
An assortment of Roman finds were collected from the surface of the ploughed fields in this area in 1964, 1967, and 1976. The artefacts that were found in the 1960s included Roman pottery, the bottom of a stone quern, 1 iron spearhead, Roman bronze brooch and pin, 5 bronze coins, and 3 iron spearheads. The coins were a bronze 1st century probable Vespasian, a Denarius Vespasian (RIC10), a Cloudius II Gothicus (Obverse: DIVO CLAUDIO, Reverse: CONSECRATIO, Altar), another probable Claudius II, and a 4th century House of Constantine. Some of the coins that were found were given to children in the village. Further artefacts were recovered in 1976, including various types of Roman pottery (Samian, possible imitation Samian, Parisian ware, 1 sherd of rusticated ware, 2 sherds of colour coat, calcite and shell-tempered wares, cream ware (Hadrianic or Antonine flagon) and a large amount of greyware) all dating from the late 1st to the 4th century, Roman tile and slag. {1}{2}
Further evidence of relatively low level Roman activity was identified in November 2018, during trial trenching on land to the west of Fiskerton Road. The recorded features comprised the truncated remains of a narrow ditch or gully, and a ditch or elongated pit. A few pieces of Roman tegula and late 1st to early 2nd century Roman pottery were recovered from these features and the overlying subsoil. {3}{4}
More extensive remains of probable Roman activity were recorded in July 2019, during magnetometry survey of land to the west of Fiskerton Road. The survey recorded a concentration of potential ditch and pit features at the eastern edge of the site, to the immediate south of the area previously investigated by trial trenching. It was thought probable that the magnetic anomalies represented the remains of former Roman settlement activity. {5}
