Full Description

PRN 52823 All Saint's Church is essentially Early Norman, but was restored in 1855 to 1856. It has an Early English bell turret/tower. The rest is Decorated and Perpendicular including the south doorway. There is an eleventh century keyhole window in the south wall, and the apse is supposed to be structurally Norman in date. There is a thirteenth century inscription to a rector in the apse. The church was in normal use in 1964. {1}{2}{3} A watching brief was carried out during the installation of drainage around the church. During this work, the foundations of the north side of the tower, nave and apse were exposed. It was observed that the 19th century apse sits over the foundations of the demolished medieval chancel, which was of one build with the nave. A group of 13th century pottery was found in the trench at the east end of the nave and may represent a phase of repair or alteration to the nave or even the construction of the tower. {4}{5} A parish church dating from the 11th century with early 13th and late 14th alterations. It was heavily restored in the 19th century. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {6} An artefact scatter of a sherd of Roman pottery, medieval and post medieval pottery and roof tile was found in the church yard during a watching brief. Three articulated inhumations, two probable juveniles and one adult were also revealed. There was a further articulated skeleton which had been sealed by a stone slab which was not recorded. {7}{8}
