Full Description

PRN 52631 SITE OF FONABY DMV. IT IS LISTED IN 1334 ONLY AS THE JUNIOR PARTNER IN A PAIR OF VILLAGES TAXED TOGETHER. {1}{2}{3} THE SETTLEMENT OF FONABY, WHICH AFTER BEING RETURNED WITH A MINIMUM POPULATION OF 18 IN 1086, DOES NOT AGAIN APPEAR WITH A SEPARATE INDICATION OF POPULATION IN 1841. IT IS OTHERWISE A JUNIOR MEMBER, EITHER EXPLICITLY OR IMPLICITLY, OF CAISTOR, AND PRESUMABLY HAD CEASED AS A VILLAGE BY C16, IF NOT EARLIER. IN C16 AND C17 FONABY WAS THE PRINCIPAL LINCOLNSHIRE RESIDENCE OF THE MADDISON FAMILY. AFTER 1656 THE FARMHOUSE REPLACED THE MANOR HOUSE. SLIGHT TERRACES WITHIN THE FARMYARD AND GARDEN OF FONABY HOUSE ARE THE ONLY EARTHWORK REMAINS EITHER OF THE VILLAGE OR LATER MANOR HOUSE. {4} A watching brief at TA1122 0303 revealed foundations for a house that stood prior to Fonaby Farm (54838). {5}{6}
