Full Description
SETTLEMENT REMAINS, FORMERLY PART OF HARDWICK LIE ON EITHER SIDE OF THE SINGLE NORTH-SOUTH VILLAGE STREET, PARTLY AS EARTHWORKS AND PARTLY PLOUGHED. THEY MAY REPRESENT TWO SETTLEMENT ELEMENTS THAT HAVE JOINED AND THEN SHRUNK AGAIN, FOR IN THE NORTH THERE ARE SLIGHT EARTHWORKS AROUND MANOR FARM WHILE OPPOSITE HIGHFIELDS FARM PLOUGHED CLOSES HAVE PRODUCED MUCH MEDIEVAL POTTERY OF THE TWELFTH CENTURY ONWARDS ALONG THE STREET FRONTAGE, TOGETHER WITH LATER POTTERY UP TO THE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY FROM AN AREA WHERE A HOUSE IS MAPPED IN 1648. BETWEEN THEM ON THE WEST SIDE OF THE ROAD A SERIES OF 5 REGULAR TOFTS, 4 WITH SIGNS OF OCCUPATION APPEAR TO OVERLIE RIDGE AND FURROW. THE PATTERN COULD REFLECT THE PRESENCE OF A MONASTIC DESMESNE FARM WITHIN OR IMMEDIATELY ADJACENT TO THE SETTLEMENT. THE SETTLEMENT ALMOST TOTALLY LACKS POPULATION STATISTICS, BUT THE 11 PERSONS PAYING THE POLL TAX IN 1377 MUST REPRESENT A REDUCTION FROM EARLIER LEVELS, AND MORE HOUSES ARE MAPPED IN C17 THAN NOW EXIST. ALSO HAS A WINDMILL MOUND. {1}{2}{3}
