Full Description

Ditches defining 3 closes of ridge and furrow field system. {1}{2}{3} Traces of ridge and furrow was discerned in this area during analysis of aerial photographs in 2010. The remains were visible as cropmarks and earthworks to the west of Newton on Trent. {4} Further traces of medieval ridge and furrow were identified in June 2015, to the north of those previously recorded, during a magnetometry survey of land at Manor Farm. The ridge and furrow was identified as a series of linear magnetic anomalies, mostly aligned on a roughly east to west axis, although the anomalies in the south-western corner were aligned roughly north to south, indicating a division of the open field system here. A small number of other linear anomalies were recorded, and were thought to represent former field boundaries or drainange ditches, associated with former agricultural activity in this area. {5} A small assemblage of medieval to early post-medieval pottery was collected in August 2015, during subsequent trial trenching of the land at Manor Farm. The sherds were recovered from ploughsoil deposits from across the site, and included a fragment from a small Stamford ware jar of 11th to mid 12th century date, a pipkin handle from 13th to 15th century Lincoln Glazed ware vessel, and the base from a large 14th to 15th century Lincoln Glazed ware jug. {6}{7}
