Full Description
IN 1989 SEVERAL AREAS OF ARCHAEOLOGICAL INTEREST WERE DISCOVERED BY GEOPHYSICAL SURVEY. {1}
IN 1990 EXPLORATORY EXCAVATIONS WERE CARRIED OUT, AND LARGE AMOUNTS OF TORKSEY WARE POTTERY WERE REVEALED, AND ALSO THE POSSIBLE STOKE-HOLE OF A KILN. ALSO DISCOVERED WERE FOUR BURIALS, THOUGHT TO BE PART OF A MEDIEVAL CEMETERY, WHICH MAY BE ASSOCIATED WITH ALL SAINT'S CHURCH (NOT DEFINITELY LOCATED). IN ADDITION 10 SILVER SHORT CROSS PENNIES, WHICH ARE THOUGHT TO BE PART OF AN ELEVENTH CENTURY COIN HOARD. {2}
DURING EXCAVATIONS IN 1994 AT LEAST SIX FURTHER BURIALS WERE POSITIVELY IDENTIFIED, AND THE CEMETERY, OF LATE TENTH TO EARLY ELEVENTH CENTURY, SEEMS TO HAVE BEEN CONFINED TO A RESTRICTED AREA ON THE NORTH-EAST SIDE OF THE SITE, WITH A DITCH THAT COULD BE A BOUNDARY. IN ADDITION, SIX FURTHER KILNS WERE FOUND (52263) TO THE SOUTH-WEST, WHICH WERE CONTEMPORARY WITH THE CEMETERY. {3}
