Full Description

PRN 52263 TORKSEY WARE AND A POSSIBLE KILN WERE DISCOVERED DURING EXPLORATORY EXCAVATIONS IN 1990. EXCAVATIONS IN 1994 REVEALED SIX FURTHER KILNS, TWO OF WHICH WERE POTTERY KILNS. ANOTHER HAD BEEN USED TO PRODUCE KILNS. THREE OTHER KILNS (EXPOSED BUT NOT FULLY EXCAVATED) MAY HAVE BEEN USED TO FIRE POTTERY, THOUGH THIS WAS NOT CLARIFIED. EXAMINATION OF THE TORKSEY WARE SUGGESTS A LATE C10 - EARLY C11 DATE WHICH IS CONTEMPORARY WITH THE NEARBY CEMETERY.{1}{2}{3}{4} Trial trenching recorded a pit containing burnt sand, charcoal and Torksey ware, thought to be a possible rake-out pit associated with a nearby kiln.
