Full Description

Two 10th century Saxon grave slabs found in the churchyard. Weathered shaft fragments were also found near the south side of the chancel. {1}{2}{4}{5} When the slabs were discovered in 1844 the pieces formed a large grave cover with a central cross and borre style motifs. The slabs were totally unrecognizable in 1964. {3} See also Jarvis mss 101/3. {1} There is also a single 10th century slab in the churchyard. Its condition suggests it was found or placed there this century. It has a cable moulded border andan incised cross on both faces. {1}{3} No pre-conquest stones were noted in the church or in its surrounding area. {6} A 10th century ashlar headstone was also found in this area. It is a small stone with cable decoration to the edges and a crudely carved outlined cross to both faces. This is the headstone of the grave cover listed separately and found when the earlier church was demolished in 1849. It is similar to other 10th century slabs found during excavations at Lincoln.
