Full Description
PRN 51430
THE MEDIEVAL SETTLEMENT OF SAXBY, ALWAYS SMALL, SHOWS SOME DOCUMENTED DECLINE RATHER THAN INCREASE FROM THE LATE C11 TO EARLY C14 RECORDED POPULATION, NO DOUBT PART ATTRIBUTABLE TO MONASTIC HOLDINGS. THE ADDITIONAL IMPACT OF BLACK DEATH WAS STILL EVIDENT WHEN THE PARISH WAS EXEMPT WITH LESS THAN 10 HOUSEHOLDS FROM THE TAX OF 1428. NO MARKED RECOVERY BUT NO AUTOMATIC FINAL DECLINE FOLLOWED, AND THE SETTLEMENT WAS SUSTAINED INTO THE EARLY MODERN PERIOD (UNLIKE NEIGHBOURING WEST FIRSBY) BY THE RESIDENCE AND ESTATE MANAGEMENT OF THE SAUNDERSON FAMILY. NO CLEAR EARTHWORKS SURVIVE AND NO EARLY ESTATE MAPS HAVE BEEN TRACED TO ALLOW THE REDUCTION OF THE SETTLEMENT TO BE TRACED OR ITS EARLIER LAYOUT UNDERSTOOD. {1}~, HTM 22M
An archaeological watching brief conducted during groundworks for a new house at The Old Blacksmith's Shop, Saxby, identified numerous aligned ditches and pits in the northern part of the site. The ditches were aligned west to east in the northern half of the site and northwest to southeast in the southern part. Although no dating evidence was recovered from the ditches and pits, they were sealed by a deposit containing numerous sherds of North Lincolnshire Fine-shelled ware pottery dating to the 11th / 12th century {3} {4}
