Full Description

A fragment from an early Anglo-Saxon bronze cruciform brooch, found somewhere in Owmby. The brooch is probably of Aberg's Group II, normally dated to the late 5th to 6th centuries. The fragment is part of the lower portion of the brooch, with the eyes of a stylised horse's head terminal being clearly visible. The only other decoration consists of two moulded hroizontal lines above the eyes. The piece is much abraded, and was broken in antiquity. The roundness of the upper break suggests that it might have been subject to intense heat, which resulted in some melting of the bronze. The possible evidence of exposure to intense heat might indicate that the brooch came from a cremation burial, and that the damage had occurred when it accompanied the corpse on the pyre. It is alternatively possible, however, that it represents a failed casting. {1}
