Full Description
PRN 51374
Romano-British pottery was found on the Trent bank in a layer of blackened soil 15 to 20 yards long. Roofing tiles were found on the south of the site. There is also pottery in the adjacent arable field, the pottery includes second century greyware lattice cooking pots, an angular Torksey-type rim, Swanpool-type flat-topped rims, large open bowls, kiln wasters, firebars and flue lining, presumably from a pottery kiln. The site was reported in 1966. {1}{9}
In December 1968 survey by proton gradiometer was followed by sample excavation within an area 750 feet east to west and 350 feet north to south, on the east bank of the River Trent. Thirty areas of high readings were located, and sample excavation has shown three of these to be Roman pottery kilns. The greywares in the filling of kiln 1 were largely in the form of wide-mouthed bowls, with some cooking pots and straight-sided dishes. A date in the third century is suggested. Some similarities with the wares of the kilns at Little London, Torksey, were noticed. Amongst the filling of kiln 3 were many fragments of roofing tile wasters, though the kiln itself appeared to be for the production of pottery. {1}{8}
A rim sherd of a Romano-British greyware bowl or jar was found at this location and reported in 1979. {2}
Possibly the earliest known fully-developed Swanpool-type kilns, with d-shaped pedestals, occurred at Knaith. They have been tentatively dated by the excavator, B. Whitwell, to within the period late third to mid fourth century. Square-ended bars found near them may suggest the presence of the possibly ancestral Linwood-type kilns within that extensive complex. {5}
The given national grid reference is actually on the other side of the Trent! The indicated area of the 6 inch Sites and Monuments map is centred at SK82808485. There are also cropmark enclosures and trackways identified by the National Mapping Programme. {10}
