Full Description

Settlement earthworks levelled in 1977 produced much post-medieval pottery including Midlands Yellow and Black wares of the 16th and 17th centuries, possible Boston ware and Glentworth-type fabrics. The post-medieval pottery was largely confined to the southern fringe of the area and probably derive from properties fronting south onto Abbey Road rather than from the ploughed earthworks. {1} At Bardney the core of the present village is centred on a small open space which is now all that survives of a large triangular open area with a lane leading directly from its north-western corner to Bardney Abbey. This area may have originally been a market place, related to the weekly market instituted by the Abbey by 1232. {2} A former road is marked to the south of the current High Street on maps of 1757, running from TF 1176 6930 to TF 1187 6943. This road has been obliterated. {3} 16th/17th century pottery was recovered during an excavation in March 1955, near Abbey Road, Bardney (PRN 51177a - TF 1198 6955). The pottery is now in Lincoln Museum. {4}{5} Late post-medieval finds and features were recorded in July 2011, during the monitoring of groundworks for new development on land behind 12 Wragby Road, Bardney (PRN 51177b - TF 1209 6953). A redeposited sherd of a 16th to 17th century earthenware bowl was the earliest evidence of activity on the site, though all of the features recorded dated to the late 19th century date, and included the remains of a former well and brick wall. Finds recovered from these features included a fragment of 19th century clay pipe, two sherds of late 19th century glass, late post-medieval pottery sherds and a fragment of dressed sandstone which may have been part of a post medieval trough or basin. {6}{7}
