Full Description
Settlement earthworks were visible on early RAF aerial photographs; when levelled in 1977, they produced medieval pottery related to visible house platforms, including Stamford ware, late 15th century Lincoln ware, 15th century early South-East Lincolnshire ware and Bolingbroke ware. {1}
Further settlement earthworks were identified on aerial photographs by the National Mapping Programme. {2}{3}
At Bardney the core of the present village is centred on a small open space which is now all that survives of a large triangular open area with a lane leading directly from its northwestern corner to Bardney Abbey. This area may have originally been a market place, related to the weekly market instituted by the Abbey by 1232. {4}
Medieval remains, including the foundations of a building and paving, pottery, and an articulated skeleton were found in 1930, in the front garden of 5 Wragby Road, Bardney (PRN 51176a - TF 1204 6956). The human remains were found in a sitting position, at a depth of 2 feet. Harper reported that the person who had made the initial discovery indicated the precise spot to him in 1964. He had called in the staff of Lincoln Museum who had found the skeleton, potsherds, crumbled stonework of an ecclesiastical nature and residual evidence of burning. They had concluded that the building was associated with Bardney Abbey and was possibly a bakery. {5}{6}
An official 14th century French jetton was found in the garden of 27 Abbey Road, and reported in 1977 (PRN 51176b - TF 1182 6962). The obverse has a shield with three lis and 'AVE MARIA GRACIA PLENA'; the reverse has a cross fleur-de-lis. {7}
Construction work in the garden of 27 Queen Street revealed stone building foundations running diagonally out from the present house (PRN 51176c - TF 1213 6956). Re-used in this was a carved window moulding, thought to be probably from Bardney Abbey. Reported by G. Benton in 1978. {8}
A silver continental Sterling coin of 13th century type was found in the garden of 'Marchwood', on Abbey Road (PRN 51176d - TF 117 696). Reported by G. Benton in 1979. The coin was very worn and virtually illegible. {9}{10}
Medieval pottery sherds including Lincoln ware and a stamp-decorated 15th century Old Bolingbroke sherd were found to the east of the former railway station, Bardney (PRN 51176e - TF 114 690). A lead weight and a fragment of Cistercian ware were also found. Reported by G. Benton in 1981. {11}
Two sherds of unstratified medieval pottery were recovered in July 2001, during a watching brief to monitor the groundworks for new development on land adjacent to 31 Queens Street, Bardney (PRN 51176f - TF 1211 6952). The sherds were fragments of Toynton ware and Raeren stoneware and dated to the 14th to 16th centuries. {12}{13}
All of the ridge and furrow earthworks around Bardney appear to have been levelled by modern ploughing, as seen on Google satellite imagery in December 2012. {14}
