Full Description

COATES WAS FORMERLY A SEPARATE PARISH. IN 1086 IT HAD A POPULATION OF 6 AND RISING TO 13 IN C14. IT WAS DEPLETED BY THE BLACK DEATH AND APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN ABANDONED IN LATE C14 OR EARLY C15. DURING THE LATE C12, THE LAND AND CHURCH AT COATES WAS GIVEN BY PETER DE COATES TO THE PREMONSTRATENSIAN ABBEY OF WELBECK, NOTTINGHAMSHIRE, WHICH RETAINED POSSESSION UNTIL THE DISSOLUTION, WHICH MAY HAVE SECURED ITS SURVIVAL THROUGH THE LATE MEDIEVAL PERIOD, ALTHOUGH IT MAY NOT NECESSARILY BE TERMED A GRANGE. A COMPLEX HISTORY EMERGES FROM ANALYSIS OF THE SETTLEMENT REMAINS SUGGESTING A DEVELOPMENT FROM AN EARLY NUCLEUS NEAR THE CHURCH WITH A REGULAR SINGLE-ROW EXTENSION ON ONE SIDE OF THE FORMER MAIN VILLAGE STREET AND WITH LATER ADDITIONAL OR REPLACEMENT PROPERTIES EXTENDED OVER FORMER ARABLE ON THE OTHER. {3}, HTM 10 M There are two separate areas of the scheduling 22762. One is focussed around the church (see record 50313). The main area of medieval settlement remains is located east of the moated complex on the north side of the present road to Grange Farm. They take the form of a series of substantial earthworks and associated buried remains. {10}
