Full Description
THE FIELD EVIDENCE SUGGESTS THAT THE WEST END OF THE SETTLEMENT MAY HAVE BEEN LATER OCCUPIED BY A MANORIAL BLOCK NOW PARTLY COVERED BY COATES HALL AND POSSIBLY HALL FARM. AN L-SHAPED MOAT UP TO 1.5 M DEEP, AND PERHAPS A REMANT OF A FEATURE THAT ORIGINALLY SURROUNDED THE BLOCK, SURVIVES SOUTH WEST OF THE CHURCH, WHICH WOULD HAVE THEN LAIN WITHIN THIS MANORIAL ENCLOSURE. IN VIEW OF THE DOCUMENTARY EVIDENCE THE MOAT MAY RATHER BE PART OF THE ENCLOSURE OF A MONASTIC GRANGE, OR EVEN AN ORNAMENTAL FEATURE BELONGING TO THE POST- DISSOLUTION RESIDENCE. {1}, HTM 10M
The moated complex is scheduled 22762, along with a separate area of medieval settlement to the north east. The earthwork remains of the moated complex around the church may be the remains of a grange of Welbeck Abbey established in the late 12th century. The moated complex, which formerly extended over the area now occupied by Coates Hall and Hall Farm, is believed to have been constructed on the site of the earlier medieval settlement at Coates. The church of St Edith was thus enclosed within the complex. Most of the complex has been greatly altered by post medieval and modern activity, and is therefore not included in the scheduling, but the south western part is believed to survive. {5}
