Full Description

The Monsons, already established at adjacent South Carlton, acquired the Manor of North Carlton in the late 16th century, perhaps in 1568. In 1607-08 the manor was in the occupation of Lady Monson, presumably Jane (died 1624) widow of Sir John Monson (died 1593-94), and included 'the greate parke' extending to over 23 acres, which lay to the west of the house, where the field name 'park' was recorded in 1805. It enclosed 2 end-on arable furlongs visible as ridge and furrow on early RAF vertical aerial photographs. Though now in arable cultivation, what may be the remains of a defining bank up to 1m high can be seen along its west and north edges. The south side has been over ploughed but a linear rise may still be seen in the ploughland. {1}
