Full Description

Great West Wood has its possibly medieval perimeter earthwork banks surviving on all except the north side. It also has surviving rectangular ponds including those close to the moated site (PRN 50280). {1} An area of woodland (26 hectares of which classified as semi-natural and the remaining hectares classified as plantation) included in the Nature Conservancy Council's 'Inventory of Ancient Woodland'. Ancient woodland status considered to be highly probable. An additional area of 13 hecatres was felled and cleared after 1956. 'Central Lincolnshire Limewoods SSSI'; Forest Nature Reserve; Nature Conservation Review Site Grade 2. {2}
