SUPPOSED FORMER MOATED SITE AT BUTYATE

Type and Period (1)

  • (Medieval - 1066 AD to 1539 AD)

Protected Status/Designation

  • None recorded

Full Description

A moat, destroyed in 1967. In the 19th century a small farm on the site was known as Butchett Farm. {1}{2} An alleged moated site, levelled in 1967. Ponds shown on the 1886 25 inch OS map at TF12827158 are clearly the result of clay digging for brickmaking. A spread of brick and tile visible after ploughing is probably the site of a brickyard known in 1926 to have been working in living memory (see PRN 51141). {3}{4}
