Full Description

THE EARTHWORK REMAINS OF THE DESERTED HAMLET AND MONASTIC GRANGE AT BUTYATE WERE LEVELLED IN 1959 AND IN 1964 WERE UNDER CROP. {1}{2} BUTYATE APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN ONE OF TWO HAMLETS IN BARDNEY WHICH WERE CONVERTED INTO MONASTIC GRANGES IN THE C12. THE SITE LIES IN THE NORTHEAST OF THE PARISH IN AN AREA WHICH INCLUDED MUCH MANAGED WOODLAND UNTIL THIS CENTURY. THE FARMLAND HERE WAS DIVIDED BETWEEN THE SETTLEMENTS OF OSGODBY AND BUTYATE, BOTH NAMED IN DOMESDAY BOOK. BUTYATE'S TENURE, INCLUDING ITS ABSORPTION INTO BARDNEY ABBEY'S DEMESNE, AND THE DIFFICULTIES OF DOCUMENTING ITS POPULATION HISTORY EXACTLY MATCH THOSE OF OSGODBY (SEE PRN 51136). AFTER THE DISSOLUTION IT APPEARS AS 'BUGGET HOUSE' OR 'BUDGET', A NAME THAT APPARENTLY SURVIVED WITH A FARM ON THE SITE UNTIL THE EARLY C19 AND ITS REPLACEMENT BY THE PRESENT BUILDING. EARTHWORKS LEVELLED IN 1959 ARE RECORDED ON APs; FIELDWALKING HAS PRODUCED MUCH MEDIEVAL AND SOME POST MEDIEVAL POTTERY FROM THE AREAS OF EARTHWORKS ON BOTH SIDES OF THE BY-ROAD. {3}
